Clark and Wheeler to Present Concussion Injury Biomechanics Research at Summer Conferences in Ireland and Canada

The Biomechanics Team at Vector Scientific, Inc. (VSI) continues to research head injuries and apply the latest head impact data to assess concussion risk in sports/recreation and motor vehicle collisions.

Dr. Michio Clark was invited to participate in the upcoming 11th European Solid Mechanics Conference Mini-Symposium on Mechanics of Impact and Trauma at the National University of Ireland this July. Dr. Clark will join his former academic advisor and mentor Dr. Michael Gilchrist from the University College Dublin to present and discuss the latest research on concussion injury biomechanics. Dr. Clark will present “Development of Refined Injury Corridors for Evaluating Concussion Probability Using Maximum Principal Strain and Direction Sensitivity.” Rumor has it a few pints may be had in Galway after the meetings in order to continue the intellectual discussions on biomechanics of head injury, of course.

In August, Jeff Wheeler will represent VSI at the North American Congress on Biomechanics in Ottawa and present the team’s work on “Rotational Head Acceleration in Rear-End Motor Vehicle Collisions and Associated Concussion Risk.” This work by Michio Clark, Wade Baker, Jack Wheeler, and Jeff Wheeler was preceded by a pilot study presented by Wade Baker at the 2021 NHTSA Workshop on Human Subjects for Biomechanical Research entitled “Validation of Rotational Head Kinematics in IIHS Rear-End Impact Tests Determined by Video Analysis.”

Additional head impact injury biomechanics research by the VSI team includes “The Effect of Active Head Restraints (AHRs) On Head Kinematics in Rear Impact Sled Tests” presented by Michio Clark at the 2020 NHTSA Workshop on Human Subjects for Biomechanical Research and ongoing work spearheaded by Wade Baker regarding rotational head kinematics in rear-end collisions.

The VSI Biomechanics Team is thankful to be traveling and presenting live at academic and scientific conferences again. Please contact VSI for your forensic injury biomechanics questions.
